We recently had the honor to build a custom unit for Speed Academy. Speed Academy is a website & YouTube Channel following the builds of functional fast cars. Powered by the minds behind the former Modified Magazine, Peter Tarach & Dave Pratte strike top notch quality.
My initial discovery of Speed Academy happened when I stumbled across their mini documentary about preparing & racing Targa Newfoundland. I was immediately hooked and had to start at the very beginning of the build. Completely sucked into how Dave & Pete document their builds, I found myself watching every free moment I had.
Eventually I caught up to the Scion FR-S Track Build Season and right away knew I had to send them a 86Nanny to help them out at the track. I reached out to Dave who studied up on the product and confirmed that it would indeed be a big help for them at the track. The timing for this was perfect because I was just in the middle of planning out custom 86Nanny offerings and I wanted to do something unique for the guys.
I spent the weekend tackling a big milestone for the 86Nanny that I had been fighting for a month. I didn’t like the idea that we have to wait for idle to drop below 1K before the Skid Control Module would let us toggle Pedal Dance mode, I didn’t like the fact that drivers with high idle tunes were locked out of Pedal Dance mode without having their tuners drop the idle RPM and most of all I wanted a thoughtless solution for serious track drivers.
Eventually I was able to accomplish the instant pedal dance feature. Your car could sit for 2 weeks in freezing cold weather and the second the engine fires up… Instant Pedal Dance mode. NO THINKING! JUST GET IN THE CAR AND DRIVE! I added this to the Speed Academy build but didn’t stop there. I knew a dedicated track car would have additional needs that the 86Nanny could provide. I laid out a configuration plan primarily focused on keeping the driver focused on the task ahead while not having to worry about prepping the car for the track.
This birthed a dual mode 86Nanny custom configuration: The default Automatic Mode which requires zero driver interaction and a manual mode which is activated with the single press of a button to gain control over features.
Here is how the Speed Academy Custom Config varies from the Standard 86Nanny PD:
